THE SHOW

> Genre:

TV based communal karaoke musical

> Duration:

weekly show of 30 minutes

> Timeslot:

Friday or Saturday night

> Roles of the user:

viewer, performer (karaoke singer)

TV'oke is a late night interactive karaoke musical series where
users can participate by singing popular songs together.

Each episode would be in a different theme, Hippioke-Karaoke representing a sample. The viewers can call in and/or use their webcam to join the party and sing the songs. They are represented by an on-screen animated character with the real head of the participant. If participants sing well and loud, as analysed by our special software, their character will increase “bloom”, which is made clear with visual clues related to the theme.

In between the communal karaoke performances there are pre-recorded clips that act as a narrative thread that takes the story forward and ties the songs together.

> capable of relating to DIFFERENT SOCIAL / AGE GROUPS due to change in weekly theme

> web-calls are FREE = more participants

> FLOATATION of singing on-screen characters = LARGE # of participants at the same time

OUT OF CONTROL PRODUCTION @ University Of Art & Design Helsinki

DIDDLE_STICH
Experimental Interactive Television [EXTV]
'Out of Control' is an experimental interactive television course in which definitions of 'narrative' and 'story' attempt to go 'out of control'.

The end result of the workshop has been three interactive television programmes in which 'control' is relinquished by the makers and empowered to the viewers - to a greater or lesser extent. There were no predetermined outcomes - but because this course is part of the 'interactive Audiovisual Narrative' (IAN) focus area it was essential that storytelling was the main feature of the products made.

Students have been encouraged to go 'out of control' with definitions of narrative and to seek innovative and appropriate technical ways in which the viewer 'takes control' of the viewing experience. The communal aspects of interacting with a live broadcast have been emphasised, rather than uses of high-tech gadgets or set-top boxes. In this respect the programmes would be suitable for broadcast on any network and all viewers would be able to interact if they so wished.

Course leader, lecturer, artistic director: Chris Hales

Tutoring and supervision: Teijo Pellinen

Producer: Pipsa Asiala

Studio Tutors: Pekka Uotila and Taku Kaskela

"Out of Control" is an educational co-production between UIAH Media Lab and KHLIM Communication and Multimedia Design Belgium. To learn more about the actual program of study,
